Nicholas A. Gage, Ph.D. is a Research Director at WestEd focused on advancing rigorous research and evaluation in education. His expertise is in supporting researchers, schools, districts, and states in leveraging their data resources to best identify and develop effective and efficient systems of support for students’ academic and behavioral needs. Specific expertise includes experimental research design and methods, statistical modeling, machine learning, and evaluation of education programs and practices. Dr. Gage has over 130 peer-reviewed publications in many high impact journals, serves on eleven editorial boards and associate editor of five journals. He has received federal grants from the Institute of Education Sciences (IES), the Office of Special Education Programs, and the Office of Elementary and Secondary Education, as well as from state departments of education and private foundations. He is currently principal investigator of an EIR early phase project and leading evaluations of four EIR early phase, three EIR mid-phase, and two EIR expansion projects.
Dr. Gage earned his Ph.D. in Special Education from the University of Missouri, completed an IES-funded postdoctoral fellowship at the University of Connecticut, and was an Associate Professor at the University of Florida prior to joining WestEd. In addition to education, Dr. Gage has a Masters in Public Administration (MPA) from the Truman School at the University of Missouri.
