This use-inspired basic research project investigates features of activity design that are related to opportunities for students bureaucratically designated as "English Learners" to develop mathematical understanding and language simultaneously. We wish to understand what students are capable of doing, in interaction with others. The project will include 1-1 interviews, paired tasks, and engaging activities for groups of four students. What we learn in clinical settings will directly inform the design of classroom lessons and activities.

When
  • Spring 2024-Fall 2026
How
  • Teachers will not participate in the study. They will nominate students to participate in the study.
  • Students who participate will take part in three after-school interviews or small-group activities. Activities will be video recorded for analysis and for use in teacher professional learning.
Benefits

The interviews and other tasks are designed as learning experiences for students. Students will engage in mathematical explorations with an interviewer trained in drawing out their ideas and interacting with them to accomplish more than what can achieve independently.

Incentives
  • Teacher advisors will receive $500.
  • Students will receive $25 per interview.
