At WestEd, John Rice served as the Director of Regional Educational Laboratory West for five years and as its Deputy Director for three years. As the leader of REL West, he oversaw all applied research projects and all projects that assisted state, regional, and local education partners with data and evidence use. Outside of his leadership of REL West, he has directed numerous large, multi-year evaluations, using a variety of quantitative methods, (for example, randomized-control trials, quasi-experiments, growth modeling) as well as mixed-methodologies (quantitative and qualitative designs). As an Associate Researcher at the Institute of Education Sciences in the U.S. Department of Education, he managed and monitored large-scale evaluations of federal education programs.
He received his PhD in Developmental Psychology from the University of California, Irvine.
