Haiwen Chu designs mixed-methods studies of English Learner learning opportunities in mathematics and their impact on their simultaneous development of understanding and language. Chu was the principal investigator on the Reimagining and Amplifying Mathematics Participation, Understanding, and Practices (RAMPUP) summer bridge program for rising ninth graders, funded by the Institute of Education Sciences. Chu also leads the Investigating Novel Math Tasks to Engage in Conceptual Talk with English Learners study, funded by the Education Core Research program of the National Science Foundation.

Chu holds a PhD from the City University of New York, a master's degree in mathematics teaching from Brooklyn College, and a bachelor's degree in mathematics from Harvard College.
